2023 federal income tax deadline is April 18, 2023
Do you want to prepare your own income taxes this year?
You can prepare your own Federal and State income taxes online for FREE, using your computer at home. MyFreeTaxes is an excellent Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified remote, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)-approved website that’s run collaboratively by The United Way and H&R Block. MyFreeTaxes gives you the tools to prepare and e-file your income taxes, both Federal and State — all at no cost. Additionally, you get free phone and chat support from VITA and H&R Block volunteers. The IRS has another excellent no-cost service called Free File. Please note that it’s only for Federal returns. However, they don’t offer VITA assistance if you need it.
If you need Income Tax Assistance:
VITA and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) provide FREE, CONFIDENTIAL, and SECURE preparation and e-filing of Federal and State income taxes, for taxpayers who qualify. This service is available for basic returns with income up to about $60,000.
To locate an open Colorado VITA site near you, use the VITA/TCE Locator or the AARP Site Locator Tools. The locator tools are updated throughout the filing season, so check back if you don’t see a nearby site listed. Also, please review the other online resources and tax help tools on IRS.gov including tax forms, instructions and publications, online payment methods and options to file with MyFreeTaxes and IRS Free File – free for most taxpayers.
Virtual VITA uses technology to connect taxpayers with a remote certified volunteer. The taxpayer visits an intake site where a volunteer helps to collect all of the required information and transmit it to a remote site for preparation. The remote tax preparer will set up a time to discuss the return over the phone with the taxpayer, to answer any questions that arise. The taxpayer then returns 1-2 weeks later to sign their prepared tax return so it can be e-filed.
Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA)
- Facilitated Self Assistance lets taxpayers prepare their own income tax returns using IRS-certified software with help from VITA/TCE tax preparation volunteers. Not all VITA/TCE
sites offer FSA.
- Some FSA sites have their own computers with IRS-certified tax prep software for clients to use, while VITA/TCE volunteers provide coaching or assistance as needed to work
through the process.
- Remote FSA allows taxpayers to use their own computer with internet access to use free online IRS-certified software to prepare their tax returns. VITA/TCE support is available
via phone, email or chat.
