Technology and therefore screen time is changing rapidly with new devices, social media platforms, games, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancements hitting the market each year. While this progress is connecting our world and transforming the way we live, it can come with challenges for families navigating the fast-paced digital world.
Emotional Challenges
Increased screen time may be associated with more social and emotional problems including depression, anxiety, aggression, and hyperactivity in children and teens. In addition, children who already experience these emotional challenges may be more likely to spend time on screens using it as a coping mechanism. On the other hand, many children and teens find value in connecting with people virtually, accessing information online for learning, and developing their digital literacy skills.
Supporting Youth
Parents and families play an incredibly important role in teaching healthy screen habits for children and teens. However, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to youth and technology. Parents should not only consider the amount of time spent on devices, but the content they are engaging with and the social interactions they are participating in.
